Moong Dal Bhaji


Moong Dal Bhaji

A tasty bhaji, goes well with Rice / Rotis / Puttu / Kanji (Paejje / Rice porridge) !!!!

Serves: 2

You will need

2 teaspoons oil

1 teaspoon mustard seeds

1/2 teaspoon cumin ( jeera ) seeds

2 green chillies, slit lengthwise

1/2 - inch piece ginger, finely chopped

6 spring curry leaves

1/2 teaspoon salt ( or to taste )

1 cup (100 g) moong dal (split yellow dal)

1 3/4 cup water

1/4 cup (3 tablespoons) grated coconut

Method

Wash and clean moong dal and keep aside.

In a wide pan, heat oil.

Add mustard seeds. When they begin to crackle, add cumin ( jeera ) seeds, slit green chillies, chopped ginger and curry leaves. Saute for 3 - 4 minutes until fragrant.

Add 1 ¾ cups water, moong dal and salt to taste. Mix well.

Cover with a lid and cook on a low heat for 20 minutes or until the water almost dries up / moong dal softens and mixed with other ingredients.

Add grated coconut and gently mix well. Serve hot with Rotis / Rice / Puttu / Pagjje (kanji / rice porridge).

Yum! I've been trying a bunch of different dal recipes lately. I'd love to try this, but curry leaves are impossible to find where I live. What would be a good substitute?
